I have chosen to analysis a performance video because there are very few shots that are within the video compared to what there are in narrative or thematic music videos.
0:00-0:08- Back shot of Tom walking along. The lighting is dark and the only visible light is the bands logo on the stage.
0:08- 0:11 - The lights turn on and Tom slowly tuns around. He is about to start playing a small ukulele.
0:11-0:24- flow on action shot. The camera is just trailing after Tom as he walks up onto the stage.
0:26-0:35- The camera lowers slightly as Tom crouches on the stage as the flowers pop up.
0:35-0:43: Mid shot of Danny and Harry putting two pieces of clouded card together. The shot then does not move when Tom and Dougie enter the shot with a cardboard golf cart.
0:45-0:47- Extreme close up of a old box wight he band on. The camera then slightly blurs and it pans in closer.
0:48- 0:51- The box is then moved away and shows the whole band stand behind it, looking as if they've just jumped out the box.
0:52:1:10- The camera pans back slightly to make the shot more of a mid shot than a close up. The band is standing on the stage, swinging around umbrellas with lyrics to the song on.
1:10-1:12- The camera pans down to Danny's feet and it is a close up of some numbers on the floor which is to symbolise ' a simple equation with no complication'
1:13- 1:28: The camera pans back up to Danny, and now all the band have join shim, each holding a sign. The shot now is a close up of the boys and they flip over the signs and dart to walk backwards and out of shot.
1:29-1:31: Close up of Danny holding an award, and then Tom appears in the shot and the shot is then an extreme close up of him.
1:31-1:42 - The close up to Extreme close up shot is carried on as Tom walks past Dougie and Harry. A strider or dolly could have been used here.
1:42- 1:55- A long shot of the rest of the hall and two mascot birds are dancing around. Tom then appears back in shot for a few seconds singing before dispersing and the camera starts to pan back round to the front of the stage.
1:55-2:25- The continuous shot is that of a mid shot that shows the band recreating all of their different album covers up to the present day.
2:27-2:42- There is then a 360 degree shot which shows Danny playing the guitar, the mascot birds still dancing further down the hall. It then shows when it pans back to Danny, that Dougie and Harry have now joined him on the stage.
2:22-2:47: A mid shot of the band dancing around.
2:47-2:57- Close of the band holding a small paper stage at 2:51 the shot becomes a extreme close up as a voice over from famous romantic film plays over. at 2:56 the camera moves slightly and focuses on one of the band members rolling in a larger version of the moon.
2:58-3:00- The change of the story is symbolised though a quick and fast cut shot that changed from the moon to harry sitting on his drums.
3:00-3:30- Pan on action shot of the band playing, the camera focusing on different members at different times.
3:30-3:43-360 degree shot of the entire stage area,and the empty hall has now been replaced with fans of the band. The shot is quite slow as it pans around the thousands of fans.
3:43-3:48- Close up of the band holding the paper stage again.
3:49-3:51- Extreme close up which allows the audience to read the sign on the paper stage which says for the fans. At this point the music cuts out slowly and sounds like the end of a chord being struck on a guitar.
I have chosen this video to do an analysis on as on a personal note this song linked in with the collective identity myself had as a young teenager. The song we are doing is about stereotypic youth and some of the different identities that youth find themselves apart off; and this song links with the identity myself related to at a younger age.
0:00-0:03- The editing of this shot starts with it opening as a circle which gets bigger as the camera zooms in on the shot. The shot shows a man laying on a hospital bed with machines around him. There is also a nurse by his side holding his hand. This suggest that the man is dying.
0:04-0:014- The single shot shows a close up of a TV which is in the hospital room. for the first few seconds the camera focuses on the man in the tbs eyes, then lips, before angling itself so you can see both but without zooming out of the shot. The man then starts to sing the first fews words of the lyrics.
0:15-0:16- A close up of the dying man back in the hospital. His features have not changed from the previous shot of him and the nurse is still in the position she was before. The only difference is the shot is more closer than it was in the previous shot of the man.
0:16-0:17- A shot of a dystopian world, with a few ballons and what looks like is snow. It's made out that the dying man is already seeing where he will go after his death. All while the music is still very quiet (almost like a lullaby )
0:18-0:19- An extreme close of the dying man face. His eyes are looking upward which could symbol his ready to die.
0:19-0:20- A quick shot back to the man on the Tv who is still singing.
0:20-0:24: Two shots of the dying mans hands thatav re very blurry and then a focused in close up of the mans face.
0:25-0:27- Mid shot of the man singing on TV again, however this time toss of the nurses are in shot which means he TV is in the room and that the man maybe singing to the dying man.
0:27-0:30- 180 degree shot of the man laying on the bed, with the nurses and doctors around him, then him watching the TV.
0:30-0:34- High angled shot of the dying man holding his hand out the nurse by his bed, then it cuts to a low angle shot of the nurse taking his hand.
0:35- 0:37- Blurred but low angled shot of the nurses face.
0:37-0:45- Quick shots of them hospital staff, the dying man and the man on the TV.
0:46-0:52-More quick shots again, which end with an close of the mans face as the screen goes black.
0:53-0:54- Quick shot of the mans eyes turning black, which symbolises his now close to death.
0:55-0:57- Behind panning in shot of the whole room.
0:58-1:00- Two different shots of the man holding his arm up, the first is a low angled which then converses onto a high angled shot.
1:00-1:02- Shot of the man on the Tv singing again as the dying man keeps his arm raised up.
1:03-1:07- The music now because instrumental, and the shot has changed to a parade of people, all wearing black and some wearing masks following a parade float that holds the band and the man from the TV singing on it.
1:08-1:10- Long shot of the parade which is traveling between two walls of burned materials.
1:10-1:15- The lead singer (who was the man on the TV) dancing to the instrumental. It has a few mid shots form different angles such as dancing him and to the side of him.
1:15-1:28- The lead singer is now singing, and it one long shot shows the parade still following the band, close up of the logo on the bands parade float and different shots of the band singing.
1:29-1:30- A close up of the dying mans face as he still reaches out to there band.
1:30-1:34- A long shot of the band of the float with the parade following him, then quick and close up shots of the band player playing.
1:35-1;38- Quick shot of the dying man reaching up again.
1:38-1:40- The shots show that both men are reaching towards one another and the tV then explodes.
1:41-1:47- Long shot that shows the hospital falling down, leaving the dying man in his bed still with the dystopian world around him and then parade walking towards him. The music pauses here for a second.
1:47-1:53- The music then becomes more upbeat and there are quick shots of the band playing
1:54-1:56- Long shot of the parade walking towards the dead man.
1:56-2:02- Mid shot of the main singer preoming, he keeps his eyes on the audience watching.
2:02-2:05- Behind shot of the dead man walking towards the parade willingly.
2:05-2:18- Various shots of the bandf singing (Close ups, mid shots)
2:18-2:28: Close up of the male singing before quick cutting to shots of the dead man wandering around looking rather lost.
2:28-2:29- Long shot of a women with her back to the camera dressed in Victorian clothing.
2:29-2:37- One shot shows the women still standing with her back to camera, the dead man appers in shot and looks around. He seems confused and is searching for confrontation of where he is.
2:38-2:48- The next shows have a low angled shot of the perfomance but also of the dead man walking towards the women. There is a extreme close up of her dress.
2:48-2:55- Quick shot of the drummer performing before cutting back to the dead man walking around the women who has now faced the camera and is revealed to be wearing a gas mask.
2:55-3:00- Long shot of the bands parade floating down the street.
3:00-3:04- :Panning shot of the dead man walking away from the women.
3:04-3:08- Close up of lead singer singing.
3:08-3:10- Mid shot of all the band standing still and looking into the camera.
3:10-3:14- Perfmace of the band, the shots are quick and have a black boarder as the shots change.
3:14-3:20- Black border shots of the band playing that quick cut into shots of the women or the man in the dystopian land.
3:20-3:28- Quick cut shots of each member of the band playing. Some are close ups and others are high angled shots. The next shot that is half a second is the dead man walking up some starers
3:29-3:30- Extreme close up which then cuts into a mid shot of the lead singer singing.
3:35-3:36- Extreme close up of the dead mans face.
3:36-3:38- Close up of the lead singer.
3:38-3:39- :Low angle shot of the dead mans shoes.
3:43-3:44- Close up of the dead mans face as he stares on in wonder as the parade walk towards him.
3:44-3:48- Mid shot of the guitarist and drummer before an close up of the singer performing and singing.
3:49-3:51- Long shot of the dead man walking towards the parade again.
3:56-3:57- Clos sup of the dead man which then disappears into a mid shot of him and two dead women standing beside him. The shot almost looks like they are posing for a picture.
3:59-4:01- Mid shot of the dead man again, however this time the band are seen standing behind him and the lead singer bends down tout something around the dead mans neck.
4:03-4:04- close up of the dead man with a meal around his neck.
4:05-4:11 -Various sots of the band such a mid shot os all of them and then shots taken from a left angle or right angle which show just some of the band performing.
4:11-4:12- Mod shot of the dead man and women again, the band is still standing behind them but we cannot see their faces. The victorian women from before also walks in front of the shot.
4:15-4:17- High angled shot of the pervious shot, however this time we only see the top of the bands bodies and the parade in the background.
4:17-4:22- Slow movement shot of the band perfuming, it could have been slowed down to create a dramatic affect or so it fits with that part of the music.
4:22-4:24- Close up of the lead singer in slow movement.
4:26-4:28- Long shot of the parade and float, which also has a air bloom with the bands name on and the song title floating in the background.
4:28-4:30- Long shot of the lead singer in slow movement bashing the microphone stand up and down.
4:32-4:35- Panning shot upwards of the dead man and women and half of the bands bodies. It is clear now that they are posing for a picture.
4:37-4:38- Long shot of the group posing for the photo as the black boated comes back around the shot.
4:41-4:43- Long shot of that agin, as the parade float away and the two women kiss the mans cheeks before walking off.
4:44-4:46- The dead man looks at his medal before looking behind him as the parade floats away.
4:46-4:54- Close in panning shot of the lead singer finishing the song.
4:54-4:57- Close up of the dead man kissing the medal.
5:58-5:02- Panning shots of the band on the float now standing still.
5:02-5:06- Long and high angled shot of the band once again standing still, however the lighting flickers and goes dark.
5:06-5:13- Long shot of the dead man walking away into the dystiopian world.
I choose to analysis this video as i wanted to compare different music videos together. This video is more of a narrative video as the camera and song tell the story about a wolf. Even though this has nothing to do with youth;it does carry the same conventions of the narrative story line which will involve into our own music video.
0:00-0:09- A long shot of a women standing with her back to the camera, naked. There is no music playing at this point, just the sound of waves crashing below the cliff on which the women is standing on. 0:10-0:14- A panning shot of a white landscape. 0:16-0:24 - Blurred long shot of the wolf running, before extreme close up of the wolfs features, the camera primarily focuses on the wolfs blood stained fur. 0:24-0:27/ POV shot from the wolfs point of view as its gets chased. 0:27-0:40- A lot of close up and jump shots of the wolf,arrows, the sleigh and the dogs. 0:40-0:43- A long shot if the wolf running in the snow 0:47-0:53- Long shot and panning which follows the sleigh casing the wolf 0:56-1:00- Edited in close up of blood on the ice 1:00-1:27-Different shots such as close ups, over the shoulder and 180 degree used to show the hunters getting ready to try and shoot the wolf, but it manages to get away and then as the hunters corner it. 1:30-1:45 - During the instrumental part it the shots are very slow paced, and there are a lot of flashing editing cuts. Throughout though,bthe camera keeps the wolf in full focus. 1:45-1:52- Another long shot of the wolf running across an open plain. ((Dolly or Slider used here)) 1:54-2:00- An extreme close up of the wolfs blood stain fur again, and an action shot of the wolf coming into the camera frame as it runs. 2:00-2:06- Exreme close ups of horses hooves trotting on the ground, and then a Exreme close up of the tail and hind legs as it gallops. 2;06-2:12- Low shot of the wolf running, which mimics its head action as it runs. 2:12-2:16- Another low shot of the horses legs and the riders legs in the stirrup 2:16-2:22 High to low panning shot from the sky then pans down to the chase in which we see the two riders chasing the wolf who is just a few meters away. 2:27-2:29 : Behind the shoulder shot of another wolf in a cave watching out as the main wolf runs past. 2:34-2:36- Distance shot of the wolf running up a cliff. 2:36-2:39 - High Angled shot of the riders dismounting 2:41-2:43- Jump cut between shots that show the hunters running up the cliff after the wolf 2:43-2:46- Close up panning shot of the snow and the blood spot trail. 2:52-2:55- Edited in shot of the wolf standing there, whilst the cliff starts beating around it. 2:56-2:59- 180 degree shot of the wolf and hunters staring st each other. 3:00-3:14- Slow paced shots during the instrumental 3:14-3:17- Camera pans away from the cliff slowly that now only has the wolf on top 3:18-3:28- Arial shots of the scenery 3:28-3:33- Low extreme close up of the wolfs paws as she walks along. 3:33-3:36- Long, blurred shot of the wolf walking to the end of the cliff as it transforms. 3:36-3:40- Camera now focues on the naked women with her back to the camera. 3:41-3:44- Camera slow pans closer to the women and goes from a long shot yo a close up. 3:44-3:50- Panning shot from the back of the women's head to the front of her face. 3:51-3:58- Distance shot of the women overlooking the cliff. The music has now cut out and the audience can't only hear the waves.
